It was the first in the series to feature a more action-based approach to its gameplay rather than its survival horror roots. Nonetheless, Resident Evil 4’s addition of co-op gameplay made it one of the most enjoyable and challenging co-op games of its time. In this review, we’d take a look at Resident Evil 4 and its co-op gameplay system.

The game follows protagonist Leon S. Kennedy as he goes on a mission to rescue the President’s daughter, Ashley Graham, from a religious cult in rural Spain. The player is tasked with surviving various enemy encounters, solving puzzles, and making choices that impact the narrative’s overall outcome. Resident Evil 4’s story and characters offer a fresh take on the traditional zombie trope, as the game’s enemies are not specifically zombies, but rather genetically engineered miscreants.

Resident Evil 4’s gameplay is where the game truly shines. It employs a third-person shooter perspective, with Leon shooting down enemies with a variety of weapons ranging from pistols to rocket launchers. The game also features a powerful melee system, with players able to use Leon’s boot to kick enemies away, or his knife to stab them in close-quarters combat. There are very few flaws in this game, primarily ones pertaining to the game’s camera system. The camera can be a bit clunky at times, which can make it difficult to aim accurately. Additionally, the game occasionally suffers from pacing issues, as players are forced to perform menial tasks like driving and escorting Ashley through the environment.

Overall, Resident Evil 4 is a fantastic game with exceptional gameplay, graphics, and co-op capabilities. The game’s ability to immerse players in its horror-filled environment is borderline masterful, and the addition of a co-op mode only adds to the game’s replayability and enjoyment.
